John Mayall "Living The Blues"

at The Lyric Theatre Oct 14, 2016 7:00 pm

The “Godfather of British Blues” will grace the stage this season at The Lyric Theatre with a night of soul-quenching sound. A pioneer of blues music for over 50 years, John Mayall and his original band, the Bluesbreakers, featured some of the greatest musicians of all time, including Eric Clapton, Mick Taylor, and Mick Fleetwood to name a few. With hits such as “All Your Love”, “Hideaway”, and “Crocodile Walk”, John Mayall has earned his place as one of the most influential blues musicians of all time.

Born in 1933, John Mayall grew up in a town outside of Manchester, England. Inspired by his father’s extensive record collection, Mayall fell in love with the blues. At age 14, the aspiring musician went to Manchester’s Junior School of Art where he continued his musical education, playing the guitar, piano, and harmonica. Taking inspiration from the sounds of Leadbelly, Albert Ammons, and Pete Johnson among others, John Mayall devoted himself fully to the blues.

However, it wasn’t until 1962 when Mayall heard that a club was opening up in Ealing, dedicated to blues music, that the musician finally found his calling. Mayall moved from Manchester to London and started the Bluesbreakers. With their fresh sound and raw talent, the Bluesbreakers quickly rose in popularity, and soon John Mayall would be backing John Lee Hooker, T-Bone Walker, and Sonny Boy Williamson in their first tours through England. In 1966, Mayall teamed up with the ex-Yardbird guitarist Eric Clapton for a ground-breaking album that was named one of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time” by Rolling Stone magazine.Although Clapton left to form the band Cream shortly after, John and the Bluesbreakers continued their success, releasing a unique drummer-less live album in 1969 that immediately achieved gold status.

In the 1970s, John Mayall moved to California where he continued working with some of the greatest contemporary recording artists. A decade later, moved by nostalgia and fan support, Mayall decided to reform the original Bluesbreakers, joining with John McVie, Mick Taylor, and a new drummer, Colin Allen, for a few tours and a video concert called Blues Alive. After receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback, John decided to permanently bring the Bluesbreakers back, and after a long search process, launched the new Bluesbreakers band in 1984, featuring Coco Montoya and Walter Trout. By 1993, Texas guitarist Buddy Whittington had joined, making his recording debut on the album Spinning Coin.

In 2005, after nearly 50 years of playing the blues, John Mayall was awarded a prestigious OBE by The Queen’s Honour list. Although Mayall permanently retired the Bluesbreakers band in 2008, the veteran blues musician couldn’t stay away from the stage for long, and in 2009, Mayall put together a new band to record an album with Eagles Records. His latest studio album, Find a Way to Care, is a testament to his enduring legacy in the world of blues. With the recent release of Live in 1967 Volume II and a brand new studio album in the works, John Mayall continues to reign as the Godfather of British Blues. Don’t miss John Mayall this season at The Lyric Theatre.

Gaelic Storm

at The Lyric Theatre Feb 19, 2017 7:00 pm

Always an exciting evening at The Lyric, Gaelic Storm returns for another night of Celtic sounds blended with country, folk, and rock and roll. Founded by members Steve Twigger and Patrick Murphy, Gaelic Storm is highly innovative, featuring fast-paced instrumentals and lyrical genius that has solidified them as one of the foremost Celtic rock groups in the world. Perhaps best known for their appearance in the 1997 hit film Titanic, Gaelic Storm blends Irish, Scottish, and pop music together in a way that no other group has done.

Gaelic Storm was founded in 1996 when Patrick Murphy, Steve Wehmeyer, Steve Twigger, and Brian Walsh met at O’Brien’s Irish Pub and Restaurant in Santa Monica, California. The four musicians decided to try a musical experiment, bringing Scottish, Irish, and pop music together in one sound. After receiving overwhelming acclaim from an audience in Santa Monica, the quartet decided to form Gaelic Storm. Shortly thereafter, the group drew the attention of filmmaker James Cameron, who invited them to play a role in his upcoming film. Gaelic Storm performed as the band in the ship steerage party scene in the hit film Titanic, catapulting their career and earning them fans from around the globe. Since their memorable performance, the Irish-bred band has recorded 10 albums and performed nearly 3,000 shows around the world.

Since creating the group the group in 1996, Gaelic Storm has added Ryan Lacey, Kiana Weber, and the multi-talented Pete Purvis, whose musical skills range from the uilleann pipes to the tin whistle, deger pipes, and highland pipes. Always pushing boundaries, Gaelic Storm's 2010 album, Cabbage, achieved quick success, debuting at #1 on the Billboard world chart. Their latest album, the 12-track Matching Sweaters was released in 2015. As member Ryan Lacey explains, Matching Sweaters is one of the most complete albums we've done so far, because it taps into every facet of our live show." As a self-described touring band, Gaelic Storm is best experienced live, so experience the sounds of Celtic rock fusion this season at The Lyric.

Ana Popovic

at The Lyric Theatre Apr 6, 2017 7:00 pm

Sultry Serbian blues guitarist Ana Popovic is back again and better than ever. The award-winning, hard-touring, guitar slinger blends smoking electric funk and slide guitar, jazzy instrumentals and a tight blues groove with soulful, feminine vocals. Add to the mix her incredible stage presence, all of which makes her an irresistible force in the world of contemporary blues music. Nominated for five Blues Music Awards, Popovic is taking the American music scene by storm.

Born in Belgrade in 1976, Ana Popovic started playing the guitar at the age of 15. Actively encouraged by her father to embrace the blues genre, Popovic impressed local artists and music teachers with her innate abilities and creativity. In 1995, Ana formed the R&B group Hush, which marked the young guitarist’s first experimentation with touring and performing. The group disbanded in 1998 when Ana went to the Netherlands to study jazz guitar. It was in 1999, after the formation of the Ana Popovic Band, that the blues musician really began to draw international attention. By 2009, Popovic had released the albums Still Making History and Blind for Love, which both reached #1 on the U.S. Billboard Blues chart.

In May 2016 Ana released Trilogy, her most ambitious project yet, twenty-three blues, jazz, and funk tunes on three CD's. Guest appearances include Joe Bonamassa, Robert Randolph, Bernard Purdie (The Purdie Shuffle), Cody Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars) and rapper Al Capone. Trilogy makes it to the top 5 best selling blues albums on the Billboard chart.

Always pushing boundaries, Ana has continued to develop her skills and vision. Ana was the only female guitar player invited to play in the 2014 -2016 all star Experience Hendrix lineup; a nationwide tour celebrating the music and legacy of Jimi Hendrix. Back at The Lyric Theatre for a third time, Ana Popovic is sure to bring the best that blues has to offer.

An Evening with David Crosby and Friends – The Lighthouse Tour

at The Lyric Theatre Nov 22, 2016 8:00 pm

Folk music icon David Crosby will perform at The Lyric Theatre this season in an evening of inventive songwriting, powerful vocals, and unmatched guitar work. Celebrating the recent release of Crosby's solo album Lighthouse, David Crosby and Friends, featuring Michael League, Becca Stevens and Michelle Willis, will perform songs off of the album, such as "Paint a Picture," as well as some of Crosby's biggest hits over the past decades, such as "Music is Love" and "Eight Miles High."

Born in Los Angeles in 1941, David Crosby originally dreamed of becoming an actor. It wasn't until the early 1960s that Crosby realized his true passion was music. In 1964, Crosby joined the rock band, The Byrds, along with Roger McGuinn and Gene Clark. The group rocketed to popularity, with hits such as "Turn! Turn! Turn!" and a cover of Bob Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man." Despite the group's early success, David Crosby left the Byrds in 1967 and formed Crosby, Stills, and Nash. The new trio proved successful as well, as songs including "Guinevere" and "Wooden Ships" became folk classics. The group's debut, self-titled album was included on Rolling Stone's list of 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. After Neil Young joined the group in 1969, CSNY continued their success and their album Deja Vu hit #1 on the Billboard charts.

By 1971, David Crosby had decided to embark on a solo career, releasing his first album If Only I Could Remember My Name, which featured guest appearances by Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, and Jerry Garcia among others. In 2014, Crosby released Croz, his first solo album in 20 years. Featuring guests Wynton Marsalis and Mark Knopfler, Croz entered the Billboard Charts in an astonishing five different categories, proving that the legendary folk icon showed no signs of stopping.

Now, two years later, Crosby has released Lighthouse, his latest, and more intimate solo release. A 9-song collection, Lighthouse was produced and co-written by Michael League, the bandleader and bassist for Snarky Puppy. Recorded at Groove Masters in Santa Monica, the album features many of the honest lyrics and political messages that David Crosby is known for. This season at The Lyric, David Crosby and Friends will perform works off of Crosby's latest album Lighthouse, as well as a number of his greatest hits from the 1960s and beyond.

Walter Parks "Swamp By Chandelier"

at The Lyric Theatre Mar 11, 2017 7:00 pm

Back again this year is jazz and blues guitarist Walter Parks in Swamp by Chandelier. The former lead guitarist for Richie Havens was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida and he makes sure to incorporate a little Florida flair into every performance. With a unique, swamp-inspired style of finger picking and raspy vocals, Parks fuses traditional Southern rock riffs with the rhythm and blues, creating a unique sound of his own. In Swamp by Chandelier, Walter Parks will give you a taste of North Florida in his one-man guitar production inspired by the historic sounds of the Okefenokee Swamp.

Walter Parks was born and raised in Jacksonville Florida, where he first developed an interest in music after picking up the viola during music class. Parks soon learned that guitar was his instrument of choice, and the aspiring musician started his first group in 1973 called The Parental Tears Band. After momentarily enrolling in business school at the University of Georgia, Walter Parks realized that his true passion was music, and dropped out to return to Jacksonville in the 1980s to start a fusion jazz band called The Sneakers. Parks won a talent contest in 1989 and by 1991, the guitarist had formed The Nudes with cellist Stephanie Winters. The group produced three albums and toured successfully through the United States, performing at colleges and folk festivals. Parks shot to stardom in 2001, when legendary singer-songwriter Richie Havens invited him to join the band.

Parks toured with Havens until 2011, when he decided to return to his roots and form Swamp Cabbage, a band that blends blues and jazz with North Florida southern rock. The group has recorded three albums, and their latest album Jive was released in April 2016. The name of the group comes from the delicacy made from the Sabal palm tree, which has been stewed by Creeks, Timuquans, Seminole and other native Floridians for centuries. Always inspired by the natural and cultural landscape of North Florida, Parks makes an effort to incorporate the sound of the swamp into every performance. For his performance at The Lyric Theatre, Parks is bringing back Swamp by Chandelier, a solo guitar performance that features an arrangement of Walter Parks’ own compositions as well as some of the guitarist’s favorite inspirations, including acoustic works by the legendary Richie Havens as well as some modernized interpretations of historic music from the Library of Congress archives.

The Mystical Arts of Tibet “Sacred Music Sacred Dance”

at The Lyric Theatre Feb 10, 2017 7:00 pm

In the Mystical Arts of Tibet, multiphonic singers from Tibet's famous Drepung Loseling Monastery will perform sacred temple music and enchanting masked dances as part of their multi-national tour for World Healing. Endorsed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and critically acclaimed for their sold out performances at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, the Mystical Arts of Tibet singers perform a rare style of vocals in which the monks intone three notes of one chord simultaneously.

The Mystical Arts of Tibet is co-produced by Richard Gere Productions and the Drepung Loseling Institue, which is the North American seat of the Drepung Loseling Monastery. The talented vocalists have performed all over the world, including appearing with Paul Simon, Philip Glass, Patti Smith, and the Beastie Boys among others. Two of the monks' recordings have reached the top 10 spot on the New Age charts, and their most recent recording combined the Gethsemani Schola's Gregorian chant singing with the Tibetan multiphonic singing. The Drepung Loseling monks have also been featured on the Golden Globe-nominated sountrack for the film Seven Years in Tibet, starring Brad Pitt, and have performed with Philip Glass at Lincoln Center during Glass' presentation of his award-winning score for Martin Scorcese's film Kundun.

Accompanying the Mystical Arts of Tibet's multiphonic singing are elaborate traditional costumes and associated masked dances, including the Dance of the Sacred Snow Lion. An intensely unique and powerful performance, the Mystical Arts of Tibet's performance has three purposes: to make a contribution to world peace and healing; to generate a greater awareness of the endangered Tibetan civilization; and to raise support for the Tibetan refugee community in India. Celebrate the beautiful tradition of Tibetan multiphonic singing and dance this season at The Lyric Theatre with the Mystical Arts of Tibet “Sacred Music Sacred Dance.”
